Liquid Stone Studios is located on Vancouver Island, in Ladysmith, B.C. Canada. The company came to be from a desire of its founder, Ian Wyndlow to combine the skills and interests he has accumulated over twenty years of practical creative experience in a variety of mediums to produce pieces that combine sculpture and practicality. In concrete he found the ideal medium to do so. He has been influenced through his travels and inspired by an appreciation of beautiful "functional art" pieces in a variety of craftsmanship styles, from the bentwood cedar boxes, masks and canoes of B.C.'s Haida craftsmen, through the stone gargoyles, cuckoo clocks and stained glass of European masters, to the snow sculptures of Quebec artists. Ian holds a master certificate in decorative concrete, and his formal training includes a general welding certificate earned in 1983 from Malaspina College, a Bachelor of Arts degree from Laval University in Quebec City and photography, drawing, sculpture and architecture courses from the University of Quebec in Chicoutimi. He also draws on a list of unconventional skills he’s picked up through a variety of experiences. These include training and employment as an orthopaedic technician, coppersmith and blacksmith techniques and the complete repair, rebuild, and articulating of a 9-metre Minke-whale skeleton as a museum piece (The major repairs go undetected in the skeleton that has been on public display since 1999). Ian also worked in construction for several years, and built his own home, where he honed his skills in woodworking, post and beam construction, decorative stone, tile, granite, flooring and intricate wooden staircase work, practicing attention to detail in all aspects of the design and finishing work. |

In June 2005, Ian completed Advanced Countertop Design Training offered by Cheng Design, an industry leader and pioneer of concrete countertops in Berkeley, California where he learned advanced mold-making techniques and essential design principals. During the intensive training, Ian interacted with Fu-Tung Cheng, who shared the secrets of his trademark high-gloss finish, now offered by Liquid Stone Studios as an optional finish. |
